We took the "Big Island Spectacular" tour and it lived up to every bit of its name.  Since we were staying in Kona we started out there.  Hilo is another location you can try.

The tour starts in Hilo heading across the southern desert portion of the island and heads out to the active volcano area.
Seeing the hot lava flow to the ocean and creat an instant cloud of steam closed out the volcano portion of the tour.

After cruising some farms that were once raising sugar cane, we stopped at Hilo airport for fuel and a quick break.

Next up was the waterfall canyon and coastal tour of the west coast of Hawaii.  The big island is very different from Oahu were we have been many times in the past.  The rural views help you to really get into the island mood.  You can see how life can slow down very easily.

A run over the big resorts on the Kona coast brings it to an end back at the old Kona Airport.

Seeing the lava flows from the tubes is something you can only see from the air and the view is amazing.  As the lava leaves a volcano it may never reach the surface, tunneling its way to the ocean instead creating a tube that will collapse into a valley hundreds or thousands of years from now.
